Do you have ripe fruits and unused green vegetables lying around in your kitchen and refrigerator and are almost going bad? Why not make some Green Smoothie?
I have been itching to share this simple, delicious and nutrient-packed smoothie recipe with you for ages!! If you are a busy mom or you find yourself starving very quickly after having breakfast or lunch, or are always reaching out for a quick breakfast or lunch that fuel your body with little to no nutrients at all, or just reaching out for tea, milo or any beverage every single day as breakfast, I have got something for you.
Well, smoothies are quick, easy to make and are high in nutrient and can help boost your energy for hours. The best Green smoothies can be super filling, energy and nutrient -packed breakfast. Green Smoothies are simple to make and with just a blender and some handful of vegetables and fruits, you got yourself some fast healthy meal all together.
I definitely recommend making this a daily habit and part of your nutrition and healthy lifestyle. You know why? Because you can drink you smoothie and easily get a serving or two of vegetables (greens) and fruits all in one sitting.
When I first introduced myself to making smoothies, it was definitely an acquired taste especially because I went all in and started using strong tasting greens like kale and micro-greens instead of mild tasting greens like spinach.
If this is your first time and a beginner at making smoothies, don’t be intimated by the color or the fact that you are drinking your veggies and fruits instead of eating them. I know many people get intimidated, because I was too. The color is mainly due to the color of the veggies and fruits used. And that should be enough sign that you are filling up you body with good vitamins, nutrients, natural sugars and phytonutrients. All of which are excellent for your body anyway.
How To Make The Perfect Green Smoothie
Before we start, let’s break down what you will need for a basic green smoothie recipe. Personally, I always use the same basic recipe that I sometimes deviate from a little bit, depending on what is in season, what is in my fridge or what I am craving for that day. So a basic smoothie recipe should have:
- Liquid base
- Vegetables
- Fruits
- Add-ins
Liquid Base: Your liquid base can always vary same as your fruits and vegetables. This may include water, coconut water or milk, whole milk, plant-base milk like oat, almond, cashew, Tiger nut milk and yogurt, etc.
Vegetables: You may use any vegetables you desire. However, the basic most people start with are spinach. When you finally acquire the taste and the hang of it, then amp it up with kale, Dandelion, waterleaf, Romaine letter, cabbage, or any green leafy veggies or other root vegetables you so desire. Just try to pack in as much greens as you can, no less than 1 cup for a single serving.
Fruits: Bananas, when frozen are the go-to fruit for many beginners. They helps to give a creamy and richer consistency and also naturally sweetens your smoothie. Be rest assured that your options are limitless when it comes to fruits. Mango, pears, apples, peaches, tangerines, oranges, grapes, avocado, pineapples, lemon, limes, all kinds of berries are all great options. Just go for it and make yourself some delicious tasting and nutrient-packed green smoothie.
Add-ins: Add-ins especially those with high nutrients and omega-3s are necessary in making green smoothies a meal instead of just another snack. Chia seeds, hemp seeds, baobab powder, nut butter (almond, peanut, cashew etc), flaxseed, black seeds or oil, coconut flakes or chips, pumpkin seeds, spirilina, cacao powder, and the list goes on. These foods are jam-packed with healthy fats like omega-3s, DHA, protein, vitamins and essential minerals.
Ratio for a Perfect Smoothie Consistency
For a single serving, aim to use this ratio. Add or subtract as you become more comfortable in making the best green smoothies.
1 Cup Vegetables (Leafy Greens) + 1/2 or 1 Cup Liquid Base + 1/2 or 1 Cup Fruits
You can start with a teaspoon or tablespoon of a single Add-ins or combination. I typically use 2-3 different add-ins depending on what I have available or what I want to achieve in regards to my nutrition.
Pro-Tip
To get a creamy and rich smoothie consistency, wash and peel your favorite green leafy vegetables and fruits, especially those that easily go bad. Portion and freeze them in freezer-safe bags. This way, it is easy to grab what you need and blend them whiles still frozen. It is also a great way to limit and reduce waste in your kitchen. I also like to freeze my veggies and fruits os that I can omit the need to use ice.
